Hafnium is a heavy metal known for its excellent corrosion resistance and can exist in two crystalline forms depending on temperature. In its pure state, hafnium is soft, ductile, and easy to roll or forge. It forms a protective oxide layer when exposed to air, shielding it from further oxidation. Hafnium is resistant to most acids and only dissolves in aqua regia and hydrofluoric acid at room temperature. When powdered, it is pyrophoric but remains non-toxic.
We offer competitive pricing for hafnium in the Evek GmbH online shop. Our commitment to customer service lays the foundation for long-term cooperation.
Hafnium is primarily used in nuclear technology as control and monitoring rods in reactors, including those in nuclear submarines. Adding just 2% hafnium to tungsten, molybdenum, niobium, or tantalum alloys notably enhances their strength and heat resistance.
Applications of hafnium include:
- Nuclear engineering (reactor components)
- Military technology (submarine reactors)
- Flash lamp production
- Alloying with niobium, tantalum, molybdenum, and tungsten
Key properties of hafnium:
- Highly flexible
- Easy to roll and forge
- Stable in air
- Resistant to most acids
- Pyrophoric as a powder
- Non-toxic
