Hafnium is a corrosion-resistant heavy metal that can exist in two crystal structures depending on temperature. In its pure form, hafnium is soft and malleable, making it easy to work with through rolling and forging. When exposed to air, it forms a thin oxide layer that protects the metal from further oxidation. Hafnium is highly resistant to most acids and dissolves only in aqua regia and hydrofluoric acid at room temperature. Finely powdered hafnium is pyrophoric yet non-toxic.
Our online shop at Evek GmbH offers attractive pricing for hafnium, alongside excellent service aimed at long-term customer satisfaction.
Hafnium is primarily used in nuclear technology, serving as a material for monitoring and control rods in nuclear reactors, including those in nuclear submarines. Even small additions of hafnium (as little as 2%) to alloys of tungsten, molybdenum, niobium, and tantalum significantly enhance their strength and heat resistance.
Main uses of hafnium include:
- Nuclear engineering (nuclear reactors)
- Military applications (nuclear submarine reactors)
- Flash lamps
- Alloying with niobium, tantalum, molybdenum, and tungsten
Key properties of hafnium:
- Excellent flexibility
- Easy to roll and forge
- Stable in air
- High resistance to most acids
- Pyrophoric when finely divided
- Non-toxic
