Hafnium is a heavy metal known for its excellent corrosion resistance and ability to crystallize into two structures depending on temperature. Pure hafnium is soft, ductile, and easy to shape through rolling or forging. When exposed to air, it forms a protective oxide layer that prevents further oxidation. Hafnium withstands most acids, dissolving only in aqua regia and hydrofluoric acid at room temperature. In powder form, it is pyrophoric, but the metal itself is non-toxic.
Evek GmbH offers competitive prices on hafnium, combined with excellent customer service for a satisfying and lasting partnership.
The primary use of hafnium is in nuclear technology, particularly for control and monitoring rods in nuclear reactors, including those in submarines. Adding just 2% hafnium to alloys with tungsten, molybdenum, niobium, or tantalum significantly enhances their strength and heat resistance.
Applications for hafnium include:
- Nuclear engineering (nuclear reactors)
- Military technology (submarine reactors)
- Flash lamps
- Alloying with niobium, tantalum, molybdenum, and tungsten
Key properties of hafnium:
- Highly flexible
- Easy to roll and forge
- Stable in air
- Resistant to most acids
- Pyrophoric when finely divided
- Non-toxic
