Hafnium is a heavy metal known for its excellent corrosion resistance and ability to crystallize in two structures depending on temperature. Pure hafnium is soft, ductile, and easy to work with through rolling and forging. When exposed to air, it forms a protective oxide layer that prevents further oxidation. Hafnium is highly resistant to most acids and at room temperature only dissolves in aqua regia or hydrofluoric acid. In powdered form, hafnium is pyrophoric but remains non-toxic.
