Hafnium is a heavy metal known for its excellent corrosion resistance. Depending on temperature, it can crystallize in two different forms. Pure hafnium is soft, ductile, and easy to forge or roll. When exposed to air, it forms a protective oxide layer that prevents further oxidation. It resists most acids, dissolving only in aqua regia and hydrofluoric acid at room temperature. In powdered form, hafnium is pyrophoric but non-toxic.
Our online shop offers attractive prices for hafnium at Evek GmbH. We are committed to high-quality service and customer satisfaction, aiming for long-term cooperation.
The primary use of hafnium is in nuclear technology, especially as control and monitoring rods in nuclear reactors and submarines. Adding just 2% hafnium to alloys of tungsten, molybdenum, niobium, or tantalum significantly enhances their strength and heat resistance.
Hafnium applications include:
- Nuclear engineering (nuclear reactors)
- Military sector (nuclear submarine reactors)
- Flash lamps
- Alloying with niobium, tantalum, molybdenum, and tungsten
Key properties of hafnium:
- Highly flexible
- Easy to forge and roll
- Stable in air
- Excellent resistance to most acids
- Pyrophoric when finely divided
- Non-toxic
