Among the steel alloys, austenitic steels are the most popular and most frequently used. In addition to a chromium content of 17%, they contain nickel and additions of molybdenum, titanium, or niobium. The nickel content allows for the austenitic structure which supports corrosion resistance. The significant presence of molybdenum in these alloys enhances resistance to chlorides, sulfuric acid, and organic acids. Therefore, stainless steel 1.4435, 316L, X2CrNiMo18-14-3 is often the best choice for applications requiring outstanding corrosion resistance. The absence of ferrite makes this steel non-magnetic in the soft condition, but it can become magnetic with increasing cold deformation. Due to the higher molybdenum content, this alloy offers better pitting resistance than material 1.4404. This steel can be easily welded with all common joining techniques. No heat treatment is required after welding if the alloy was welded in the annealed condition.
