Zirconium is a heavy metal belonging to the titanium group, known for its exceptional corrosion resistance, good flexibility, and relative softness. It is easy to process by rolling, forging, and hammering. While zirconium has low electrical conductivity, it efficiently conducts heat. At elevated temperatures, it reacts with most nonmetals, but forms a stable oxide layer in air, making it resistant to acids. However, it can be attacked at room temperature by aqua regia and hydrofluoric acid, but is unaffected by aqueous bases. Finely divided zirconium is pyrophoric. The metal is non-toxic and naturally present in the human body.
At Evek GmbH, you can find up-to-date prices for zirconium in our online shop. We are committed to providing high-quality products and excellent customer service.
Zirconium is mainly used in the nuclear industry for cladding uranium fuel elements (Zircaloy alloy). It is also valuable in chemical plant construction (for valves, pumps, stirrers), and as an alloying element to enhance steel's corrosion resistance. Zirconium alloys are utilized in surgical instruments. Thanks to smokeless combustion, zirconium serves as a component in flashlight powders for fireworks and signal lights.
Typical applications of zirconium include:
- Nuclear power plants (cladding for uranium fuel elements)
- Chemical industry equipment (construction of chemical plants)
- Alloying metal for steel and surgical tools
- Flashlight powder in fireworks and signal lights
- Manufacturing abrasive paper and pigments
Main properties of zirconium:
- Exceptional resistance to corrosion
- Good flexibility and ductility
- Low electrical conductivity
- Good thermal conductivity
- High resistance to most acids and aqueous bases
- Pyrophoric in powdered form
- Non-toxic
