Zirconium is a heavy metal belonging to the titanium group, known for its outstanding corrosion resistance, good flexibility, and relatively soft texture. It is easy to roll, forge, and hammer. Although it is a poor conductor of electricity, zirconium conducts heat relatively well. At elevated temperatures, it reacts with most nonmetals, but due to passivation, it remains stable in air. Zirconium is acid-resistant, though it can be affected at room temperature by aqua regia and hydrofluoric acid. It is not sensitive to aqueous bases. In finely divided form, zirconium can be pyrophoric. It is non-toxic and naturally present in the human body.
We offer up-to-date zirconium prices in the Evek GmbH online shop. Our goal is to provide you with high-quality products and the best customer service.
The primary use of zirconium is in nuclear power plants, where it is used to make fuel element cladding from Zircaloy alloys. It is also widely used in the chemical industry for manufacturing plant equipment like valves, pumps, and mixers. As an alloying element, zirconium enhances steel’s corrosion resistance and is used for producing surgical instruments. Additionally, due to its smokeless combustion, zirconium is used in flashlight powders for fireworks and signal flares.
Applications of zirconium include:
- Nuclear power plant fuel element cladding
- Chemical plant construction
- Alloying with steel and for surgical instruments
- Flashlight powder for fireworks and signal lights
- Production of abrasive paper and pigments
Key properties of zirconium:
- Exceptional corrosion resistance
- Good flexibility and malleability
- Poor electrical conductivity
- Relatively good heat conductivity
- Highly resistant to most acids and aqueous bases
- Pyrophoric in powder form
- Non-toxic
