Molybdenum is a transition metal characterized by high strength, hardness, and toughness. It is easy to process and stretch, and possesses the highest melting point among the 5th period metals. Molybdenum is resistant to non-oxidizing acids and oxidizing alkali melts, but dissolves in strong oxidizing acids such as concentrated sulfuric acid, nitric acid, or aqua regia. Its oxide layer makes it stable when exposed to air.
