Molybdenum is a transition metal known for its exceptional strength, hardness, and toughness. It is easy to stretch and process, and among 5th period metals, it has the highest melting point. Molybdenum resists attack from non-oxidizing acids and oxidizing alkaline melts, but dissolves in oxidizing acids such as concentrated sulfuric acid, nitric acid, or aqua regia. Thanks to a protective oxide layer, molybdenum remains stable when exposed to air.
