Hexagonal steel, made from unalloyed quality steel with material number 1.0503 (also known as C45 steel), is designed for hardening and tempering processes. This enhances its hardness, resilience, tensile strength, and fatigue resistance. Due to its higher carbon content, C45 hexagonal steel has limited weldability and is therefore not suitable for large welded structures.

This hexagonal steel features good wear resistance, machinability, dimensional stability, high toughness, and relatively high strength. It is ideal for components subject to low mechanical loads. Its machinability can be further improved by the addition of lead (0.15–0.35% by mass).
