Titanium Grade 5, also known as Ti6Al4V, is the most commonly used titanium alloy. Its chemical composition consists of 6 % aluminum, 4 % vanadium, 0.25 % (maximum) iron, 0.2 % (maximum) oxygen and the rest titanium.

It is considerably stronger than commercially pure titanium, but has the same rigidity and thermal properties. One of its many advantages is its heat treatability. This grade offers an excellent combination of strength, corrosion resistance, weldability and machinability. Therefore, there are numerous applications, e.g. for military aircraft or turbines. It is also used for surgical implants. In general, it is used for applications up to 400 degrees Celsius. Its properties are very similar to those of 300 series stainless steel, especially 316.

Titanium Grade 5 is mainly used for its corrosion resistance and is the most commonly used specification for all product forms. The alloy is characterized by very high strength, good corrosion resistance, excellent strength-to-weight ratio and high strength at cryogenic temperatures.
