Austenitic stainless steels are the most widely used steel alloys. With a chromium content of 17%, these steels also contain nickel and may include molybdenum, titanium, or niobium. Nickel ensures an austenitic structure, which provides excellent corrosion resistance. The high molybdenum content significantly boosts resistance to chlorides, sulfuric acid, and organic acids, making 1.4435, 316L, X2CrNiMo18-14-3 stainless steel ideal for applications requiring superior corrosion resistance. In its soft state, this steel is non-magnetic but may become magnetic after cold working. Compared to 1.4404, it offers better resistance to pitting due to its higher molybdenum content. This alloy is easy to weld using all standard techniques and does not require post-weld heat treatment when welded in the annealed condition.
