Scandium is a transition metal and is classified as a rare earth metal. As the density of scandium is less than 5.0 g/cm³, it is considered a light metal. At room temperature, it is soft and becomes dull in air, forming a protective oxide layer. In water and hydrochloric acid, scandium metal is soluble with hydrogen formation. Finely divided scandium powder has pyrophoric properties, i.e. it can ignite spontaneously.
