Bluish-white, shiny, very hard and brittle metal with a density of 7100 to 7190 kg/m3, symbol Cr, atomic number 24 and relative atomic mass 51.996. It crystallizes in a body-centered cubic structure. The melting point is 1860 to 1900ºC, the boiling point is 2317 ºC and the Brinell hardness is 70 HB.
As an alloying element for stainless steels. Even small amounts of Cr give the steel high mechanical load-bearing capacity.
