Gadolinium is a rare earth metal and belongs to the group of lanthanides. It has good ductility and forgeability. The metal is ferromagnetic and therefore has a heat capacity that is highly dependent on temperature. Gadolinium is stable in dry air. In humid air, it forms a non-protective oxide film. It dissolves in water, forming hydrogen. Dusts of metallic gadolinium have pyrophoric properties, i.e. they are flammable and explosive. In elemental form, the metal is toxic.
