Erbium is a very rare element that is assigned to the rare earth metals and belongs to the lanthanides. The metal can be well forged but exhibits high brittleness. In air, it discolors gray and then shows very good resistance. Erbium reacts with mineral acids under hydrogen formation. At higher temperatures, it burns with the formation of sesquioxide Er₂O₃.
