Erbium is a very rare element that is classified as a rare earth metal and belongs to the lanthanides. The metal is easy to forge, but is highly brittle. It turns grey when exposed to air and then shows very good resistance. Erbium reacts with mineral acids to form hydrogen. At higher temperatures, it burns to form sesquioxide Er₂O₃.
