Samarium is the silvery metal from the lanthanide element category. It belongs to the group of rare earth metals. The metal is relatively soft and very reactive. It forms an oxide layer in air. In metallic form, samarium ignites above 150°C. It reacts with water forming hydrogen and hydroxide and dissolves in diluted and mineral acids. The metal appears in three modifications: α- (trigonal), β- (hexagonal), and γ-modification (cubic body-centered).

Samarium is primarily used in permanent magnets: the metal is the main component of the high-quality alloy with cobalt (samarium-cobalt alloy). The magnets from this alloy retain their magnetism even at high temperatures of up to 700°C. Other applications of the metal are:

• as a component of the mixed metal (about 1%) for flints;
• manufacturing of optical glass with infrared light absorption capability;
• refractory materials;
• as a catalyst for the hydrogenation and dehydrogenation of ethanol.
