Samarium is a shiny, silvery metal from the lanthanide category of elements. It belongs to the group of rare earth metals. The metal is relatively soft and very reactive. When exposed to air, it becomes coated with an oxide layer. In metallic form, samarium ignites above 150 °C. It reacts with water to form hydrogen and hydroxide and dissolves in dilute and mineral acids. The metal occurs in three modifications: α- (trigonal), β- (hexagonal) and γ-modification (body-centered cubic).

Samarium is mainly used in permanent magnets: the metal is the main component of the high-quality alloy with cobalt (samarium-cobalt alloy). Magnets made from this alloy retain their magnetism even at high temperatures of up to 700°C. Other areas of application for the metal are

  • As a component of the mixed metal (approx. 1%) for flints;
  • production of optical glass with the ability to absorb infrared light;
  • refractory materials;
  • as a catalyst for the hydrogenation and dehydrogenation of ethanol.

The metal has the following properties:

  • relatively soft and very reactive;
  • stable in air;
  • flammable at high temperatures;
  • three modifications.

You can find samarium in the Evek GmbH online store. Other rare earth metals are also available at a good price.
