Indium is a rare heavy metal known for its exceptional ductility, low hardness, and low melting point. While stable in air at room temperature, indium reacts with many nonmetals at high temperatures. It does not dissolve in hot water or most organic acids and is resistant to saltwater, but readily dissolves in mineral acids such as nitric or sulfuric acid.

Today, indium is primarily used to produce indium tin oxide, a semi-conductive and transparent material essential for flat panel displays and touch screens. Indium is also used as an alloying element with bismuth, tin, cadmium, lead, gallium, copper, and manganese. Gallium-indium alloys are important for high-temperature thermometers, and indium-copper-manganese alloys are used in coils and transformers.
Main applications of indium include:
- Manufacturing indium tin oxide for flat screens and touch screens
- As an alloying agent with metals like gallium, copper, manganese, bismuth, tin, cadmium, and lead
- Production of coils and transformers
- Use in phototransistors, solar cells, and lasers
Key properties of indium:
- Extremely ductile and very soft
- Low melting point
- Stable in air
- Insoluble in most organic acids
- Low toxicity
You can easily purchase indium from Evek GmbH. As a trusted supplier, we ship worldwide and are committed to providing excellent service and customer satisfaction.
