The material 1.4439 is an austenitic chromium-nickel-molybdenum stainless steel. The high molybdenum content in combination with an addition of nitrogen gives the alloy its improved corrosion resistance, especially in service containing acid chloride. This combination of molybdenum and nitrogen also improves the alloy's resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.

Alloy 317LMN's nitrogen content acts as a reinforcing agent, giving it a higher yield strength than 317L. Alloy 317LMN is also a low carbon grade which allows it to be used in the as-welded condition without precipitation of chromium carbide at grain boundaries.

Alloy 317LMN is nonmagnetic in the annealed condition. It cannot be hardened by heat treatment, only by cold working. The alloy is easily welded and fabricated by standard manufacturing practices.
