The material 1.4539 combines molybdenum and copper with iron for an enormously increased resistance to reducing acids such as sulfuric acid. It very well resists chlorides in the environment, resulting in low levels of pitting and crevice corrosion as well as stress corrosion cracking.
Stainless steel 1.4539 is frequently used in the chemical, pharmaceutical, oil and gas industries. Typical applications include tanks, valves, heat exchangers, flanges and manifolds. The addition of copper to the composition of stainless steel 904L supports its suitability for components such as tanks and other products used when handling sulfuric and phosphoric acid.
If better resistance to pitting corrosion than 316 is required, stainless steel 904L may be suitable. With its high nickel content of 25%, it offers improved resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking compared to other austenitic grades such as 304.
