Terbium is a rare-earth metal from the lanthanide group with atomic number 65. It is ductile and can be forged well. Above 1315 °C, α-terbium transforms into β-terbium. The metal forms a solid oxide film in air and is therefore relatively stable. It burns to Tb₄O₇ and reacts with water to form hydroxide while producing hydrogen.

Terbium is an unusual metal from the lanthanide group and has a wide range of unique physical properties, as well as its alloys and compounds. The main applications of terbium are:

• as an additive element in terbium-iron-cobalt alloys (rewritable magneto-optical disks);
• increasing coercivity in neodymium-iron-boron magnets;
• optical isolators (terbium-gallium-garnet);
• as a dopant in SSDs.

Terbium has the following properties:

• ductile and easily forgeable;
• relatively stable in air;
• reacts with water;
• transitions to the β form above 1315 °C.
