Terbium is a rare earth metal from the lanthanide group with atomic number 65. It is ductile and can be easily forged. Above 1315 °C, α-terbium transitions to β-terbium. The metal forms a solid oxide film in air, making it relatively stable. It burns to Tb₄O₇ and reacts with water to form hydroxide with hydrogen release.

• as an additive in terbium-iron-cobalt alloys (rewritable magneto-optical disks);
• increasing the coercivity in neodymium-iron-boron magnets;
• optical isolators (terbium-gallium garnet);
• as a dopant in SSDs.

Terbium has the following properties:

• ductile and easily forgeable;
• relatively stable in air;
• reacts with water;
• transition to β-form above 1315 °C.
