Germanium is a semi-metal and is classified as a semiconductor. It has good brittleness and is very stable in air at room temperature. As germanium is a semiconductor, its electrical conductivity at room temperature is very low. However, it increases significantly as the temperature rises. The metal is insoluble in alkalis, hydrochloric acid or diluted sulphuric acid. It only dissolves in concentrated sulphuric acid and concentrated nitric acid.
