Holmium is a soft and malleable rare earth metal from the lanthanide group. The metal has excellent ferromagnetic properties. It can also form magnetic compounds, e.g. with yttrium. Holmium shows relatively good stability in dry air, but forms an oxide layer in humid or warm air. It is highly soluble in mineral acids. The metal is not very toxic. Its dusts are explosive and flammable.
