Thulium is a very soft metal from the lanthanide group that is well ductile and malleable. It has atomic number 69 and is classified among the rare earths. Thulium shows good resistance against dry air. In moist air, it turns gray. At elevated temperatures above, thulium converts to Tm₂O₃ (sesquioxide). It is not resistant to water and reacts under water with hydrogen formation to form the hydroxide. In mineral acids, the metal dissolves with hydrogen evolution.
