Thulium is a very soft, ductile and malleable metal from the lanthanide group. It has the atomic number 69 and is counted among the rare earths. Thulium shows good resistance to dry air. In humid air, it takes on a grey color. At elevated temperatures, thulium changes into Tm₂O₃ (sesquioxide). It is not resistant to water and reacts with it to form hydroxide with the formation of hydrogen. The metal is soluble in mineral acids, forming hydrogen.

Due to its properties, thulium can only be used in a few applications:

• as a doping agent;
• as a source of X-rays (gamma emitters).
