Samarium is the silvery-glossy metal from the element category of the lanthanides. It belongs to the group of rare-earth metals. The metal is relatively soft and very reactive. In air, it forms an oxide layer. In metallic form, samarium ignites above 150 °C. It reacts with water to form hydrogen and hydroxide, and it dissolves in dilute and mineral acids. The metal occurs in three modifications: α- (trigonal), β- (hexagonal) and γ modification (cubic, body-centered).
Buy samarium from Evek GmbH, the competent supplier for rare-earth metals.
Samarium is mainly used in permanent magnets: the metal is the main component of the high-quality alloy with cobalt (samarium-cobalt alloy). Magnets made from this alloy retain their magnetism even at high temperatures of up to 700°C. Other applications of the metal include:
- as a component of the mixed metal (about 1%) for ignition devices;
- manufacturing optical glass with the ability to absorb infrared light;
- fire-resistant materials;
- as a catalyst for the hydrogenation and dehydrogenation of ethanol.
The metal has the following properties:
- relatively soft and very reactive;
- stable in air;
- ignitable at high temperatures;
- three modifications.
You can find samarium in the Evek GmbH online shop. Other rare-earth metals are also offered at a good price.
