Molybdenum is one of the transition metals. It is high-strength, hard, and tough. The element is well ductile and workable. It has the highest melting point of all metals in the 5th period. Molybdenum metal is not susceptible to non-oxidizing acids. It also shows insensitivity to oxidizing alkaline melts. In oxidizing acids (concentrated sulfuric acid, nitric acid, or aqua regia), the metal is well soluble. Due to the formation of the oxide layer, it is resistant in air.
