Molybdenum is a transition metal. It is highly durable, hard and tough. The element is easily malleable and workable. It has the highest melting point of all metals in the 5th period. Molybdenum metal is not susceptible to non-oxidising acids. It is also resistant to oxidising alkali melts. The metal is highly soluble in oxidising acids (concentrated sulphuric acid, nitric acid or aqua regia). It is resistant to air due to the formation of an oxide layer.
