u10a is an unalloyed tool steel. The iron content in this quality is around 97%. The material designation u10a means:

• U - carbon steel;
• 10 - about 1% carbon content;
• A - Steel quality very high.

The material has a fairly high hardness, but at the same time it has low through-hardening, heat resistance and wear resistance. The hardness decreases rapidly when the cutting edge is heated above 250-300 °C. After the final heat treatment, the grade becomes much stronger. The material is not suitable for welding.
