Gadolinium is a rare-earth metal and belongs to the lanthanide group. It has good ductility and workability. The metal is ferromagnetic and therefore has a heat capacity that depends very strongly on temperature. Gadolinium is stable in dry air. In humid air, it forms a non-protective oxide film. In water, it dissolves with the evolution of hydrogen. Dust from metallic gadolinium has pyrophoric properties, i.e., it is fire- and explosion-hazardous. In elemental form, the metal is toxic.
