Description:
Holmium is a moderately hard, silver-white metal that is relatively stable in air. It reacts easily with dilute acids, but not with hydrofluoric acid (HF), whether dilute or concentrated, because a protective surface layer of HoF3 forms. Holmium is a very strong paramagnet above 133 K (–140 °C or –220 °F). At this temperature, the metal orders antiferromagnetically and forms a spiral structure in the base plane. At 19 K (–254 °C), the magnetic moments along the c-axis tilt by about 10° out of the base plane and form a conical ferrimagnetic structure.
