Description:

Erbium is rarely used as a metal because it starts up slowly in the air and is attacked by water. When alloyed with metals such as vanadium, erbium reduces its hardness and improves its workability. Erbium oxide is sometimes used in infrared absorbing glass, for example in protective glasses for welders and metal workers. When erbium is added to the glass, the glass gets a pink shimmer. It is used to add color to some sunglasses and gemstones. Broadband signals transmitted by fiber optic cables are amplified by incorporating erbium into the fiber.
