Erbium is a very rare element that belongs to the metals of the rare earths and is classified among the lanthanides. The metal can be forged well, but it has high brittleness. In air, it turns gray and then shows very good resistance. Erbium reacts with mineral acids under hydrogen formation. At higher temperatures, it burns to form sesquioxide Er₂O₃.
