Chromium is a transition metal with atomic number 24 from the chromium group. It is hard and tough, and can be easily formed and forged. Chromium metal shows excellent corrosion resistance and is antiferromagnetic. It is soluble in hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid. However, the metal does not dissolve immediately; it dissolves only after the protective oxide layer has detached. During the dissolution of chromium, hydrogen is produced.

Chromium metal and its compounds are used in a wide range of industrial applications:

• Metallurgy (as an alloying element in corrosion- and heat-resistant stainless steels);
• Decorative and hard chromium plating;
• Chromating metals (mainly zinc, but also aluminum, magnesium, silver and cadmium);
• Tanning of leather (with chromium(III) salts);
• Catalyst (to accelerate chemical reactions).
