Chromium is a transition metal with atomic number 24 from the chromium group. It is hard and tough, and can be shaped and forged well. Chromium metal shows excellent corrosion resistance and is antiferromagnetic. It is soluble in hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid. However, the metal does not dissolve instantly; dissolution occurs after the protective oxide layer has detached. During the dissolution of chromium, hydrogen is released.

Chromium metal and its compounds are used in a wide variety of industrial applications:

  • Metallurgy (as an alloying element in corrosion- and heat-resistant stainless steels);
  • Decorative and hard chrome plating;
  • Chromating of metals (mainly zinc, but also aluminum, magnesium, silver and cadmium);
  • Tanning of leather (with chromium(III) salts);
  • Catalyst (to accelerate chemical reactions).
