Cadmium (rarely also cadmium) is a very rare metal. It has excellent formability and ductility, and it is soft and malleable. Cadmium is resistant to air and, when heated, forms an oxide layer. The metal does not dissolve in alkalis. It is difficult to dissolve in sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid, but dissolves well in nitric acid. Cadmium has high toxicity and is therefore very poisonous.
