Zirconium is classified as a heavy metal and belongs to the titanium group. It has a very high corrosion resistance, good bendability, and is relatively soft. Zirconium is well rollable, forgeable, and hammerable. It is a poor electrical conductor, but a relatively good thermal conductor. Under high temperatures, zirconium reacts with most nonmetals. Owing to passivation, it is stable in air. The metal is resistant to acids. However, it is attacked even at room temperature by aqua regia and hydrofluoric acid. Zirconium is insensitive to aqueous bases. In finely divided form, zirconium has pyrophoric properties. It is non-toxic and occurs in the body.
