Holmium is a soft and malleable rare-earth metal from the lanthanide group. The metal has excellent ferromagnetic properties. It can also form magnetic compounds, e.g., with yttrium. Holmium shows relatively good stability in dry air; however, in humid or warm air, an oxide layer forms. It is well soluble in mineral acids. The metal is low in toxicity. Its dusts are explosive and fire-hazardous.

Since the metal has excellent magnetic properties, it is mainly used for pole pieces in high-performance magnets. Other applications include:

• as an alloying additive for degassing aluminum alloys;
