Holmium is a soft and malleable Rare Earth metal from the lanthanide group. The metal has excellent ferromagnetic properties. It can also form magnetic compounds, e.g., with Yttrium. Holmium shows relatively good stability in dry air, but in humid or warm air, it forms an oxide layer. It is well soluble in mineral acids. The metal is slightly toxic. Its dust is explosive and flammable.

Due to its excellent magnetic properties, it is primarily used for pole shoes in high-performance magnets. Other applications include:
