Cerium is a rare metal with atomic number 58 from the lanthanide group. After europium, it is the second most reactive element in this group. It reacts with water to form cerium(III) hydroxide. In addition, alkalis and acids also strongly attack cerium. With alkalis, cerium reacts to form cerium hydroxides; with acids, it forms salts.

Metallic cerium is rarely used in pure form. One of the main applications of cerium is the production of mischmetal, an alloy of rare-earth metals. Mischmetal is added to aluminum alloys as well as high-temperature iron-based alloys. In the melting process, it serves as a separating agent for sulfur and oxygen. Another application of cerium-based mischmetal is cerium iron (cereisen), which is used in lighters as a flint.

In other cases, cerium is mainly used in compounds.
