Zinc is a brittle transition metal from the zinc group. It is a ductile heavy metal that can be easily deformed at 120 °C to 150 °C and thus rolled into sheets and wires. In the air, zinc metal is resistant due to passivation. At a temperature of 220 °C, it can easily be processed into powder. In powder form, zinc is pyrophoric, i.e., it can spontaneously ignite in air at room temperature. Zinc is soluble in acids with the formation of salt and hydrogen. In alkalis, it dissolves with the formation of zincates. However, high-purity zinc (99.999%) is acid-resistant.
