Chromium is a transition metal with atomic number 24 from the chromium group. It is hard and tough, and can be easily shaped and forged. Chromium metal shows excellent corrosion resistance and is antiferromagnetic. It is soluble in hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid. However, the metal does not dissolve instantly; it dissolves after the protective oxide layer has been removed. During the dissolution of chromium, hydrogen is released.
