Cadmium (rarely also spelled cadmium) is a very rarely occurring metal. It has excellent formability and ductility, and it is soft and malleable. Cadmium is resistant to air and forms an oxide layer when heated. The metal does not dissolve in alkalis. It is difficult to dissolve in sulfuric and hydrochloric acid and dissolves well in nitric acid. Cadmium has high toxicity and is therefore very poisonous.
