AZ31B is undoubtedly the most widely used magnesium grade and is produced in a wide variety of forms, from sheets and plates to bars. Due to its high strength-to-weight ratio, it is often used as an alternative to aluminum alloys. However, caution is required when machining this alloy, as chips and powder can be flammable.

This alloy also features very good strength and ductility at room temperature, excellent thermal conductivity, high corrosion resistance, excellent weldability, and high recyclability. Its exceptional dimensional stability enables the manufacture of very complex components.

AZ31B is used in a wide variety of applications in aerospace as well as in general commercial applications where good properties and a high strength-to-weight ratio are required.

The material is very well machinable. As with all magnesium alloys, caution is necessary because the material is flammable. It is best welded using the tungsten inert gas arc welding process and the metal arc welding process.
