Historically, indium was fused with germanium to create pn junctions in early semiconductor diodes. It is also a key component in low-melting alloys such as Galinstan and is valued for its ability to adhere to a wide range of surfaces—making it ideal for soldering metals to glass.
When alloyed with tin, indium serves as a low-melting, high thermal conductivity solder for heat-dissipating electronic components. Its excellent reflectivity and resistance to atmospheric corrosion make it suitable for mirror coatings, including automotive headlights and astronomical mirrors. Indium is also used in photocells and as a phosphor in various applications.
