Description:

Silicon is a typical semi-metal from the carbon group. It has properties of metals as well as non-metals and is considered a semiconductor. Pure silicon has a very low electrical conductivity. In contrast, its thermal conductivity is very high. Silicon is resistant to acids and water, but is soluble in hot alkaline solutions with the evolution of hydrogen. Silicon has 23 isotopes. Three of these are stable and occur in nature.

Pure silicon has the following properties:

  • Semi-metal with properties of metals and non-metals;
  • Semiconductor;
  • very low electrical conductivity;
  • very high thermal conductivity;
  • Acid and water resistance;
  • soluble in hot alkaline solutions.

Silicon is used:

  • for the production of microchips and semiconductors;
  • as semiconductor material in blue light emitting diodes;
  • as an alloy additive in aluminum alloys;
  • as silicon carbide for the manufacture of refractory materials.
