Description:

Alloy 718 is a precipitation hardenable nickel-based alloy that exhibits exceptionally high flow, tensile and creep rupture properties at temperatures up to 1300 ° F. The slow aging behavior of alloy 718 enables annealing and welding without spontaneous hardening during heating and cooling. This alloy has excellent weldability compared to the nickel-based superalloys hardened by aluminum and titanium. This alloy was used for parts of jet engines and high-speed aircraft such as wheels, blades, spacers, and high-temperature screws and fasteners.

Areas of application:

  • This Inconel® grade makes up around half of the production of superalloys today and is often used in the energy industry due to its high voltage resistance at temperatures in gas turbines. It is so common in these applications that about 30% of the weight of a typical engine is made from alloy 718. It is used in compressor blades and vanes, shafts, support casings, and more.
  • Almost half of the 718 nickel alloy manufactured today is used in aerospace applications such as aircraft and rocket engines for many essential components such as blades and sheet metal. This superalloy features a temperature range while maintaining creep resistance, corrosion resistance, tensile strength and yield strength that prevent stress fractures under normal operating conditions. The strong toughness at low temperatures that makes it ideal for spacecraft also makes it perfect for cryogenic applications, such as liquid nitrogen storage containers kept at -196 degrees F.
